Check-in and Check-out for the Lambeth Apartments:
Check-in is between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on May 29. In order to adequately prepare your room for your arrival, conference services asks that you do not attempt to check-in earlier than this time. If you are scheduled to arrive after 8:00 p.m. or on a different day, please call (434) 924-4479, and a staff member will be glad to meet you at the Conference Services office to check you in. To check in, you’ll go to the Gibbons House office wing, directions here: https://www.virginia.edu/housing/directions.php
Check-out will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on June 18. If you are planning to check out outside of that time, please go to Conference Services at Gibbons House (directions just above) to turn in your key.
Parking and Transportation:
If you will have a car in Charlottesville, you can pick up a parking pass at UVa’s department of parking and transportation upon your arrival at 1101 Millmont Street between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday. (Note that they will be closed on Monday, May 30 for memorial day and will reopen on the morning of May 31). If you’re staying in the Lambeth apartments, you can get a parking pass for that residence. Both the Lambeth apartments and Gibson Hall, where our institute will be held, are along the free University bus routes. If you are staying off-campus, the nearest available parking lot will be at Scott Stadium, a short walk to Gibson Hall. The cost for three weeks of parking last summer was $31.25, so expect it to be in that ballpark. If youre staying on campus and arriving over the weekend when the parking office is closed, there is a public parking garage across the street from the Lambeth apartments, and several parking lots on campus whose restrictions are lifted during the weekends.
While you’re here,  this website will help you to navigate the University bus system, and this one will help you to navigate the city buses. If you’re planning to use either transit system, I’d highly recommend that you download the TransLoc app to your mobile phone, which offers maps of routes and stops and tracks the buses’ progress by GPS.
Library and Internet Privileges:
In order to use the library’s resources during your stay, you’ll need to present a valid photo ID and fill out an application to declare yourself an independent researcher. These forms are available at the circulation desk of Alderman library. We have scheduled a brief library orientation for you on May 31 at 3 p.m.
While you’re on campus, you’ll have access to the university’s wifi. This is something that we’ll set up for you on the first day of the institute.
Institute Materials:
You will be responsible for acquiring the reading materials listed on the syllabus. If throughout the course of the institute we use different materials that are not listed on this schedule—for example, book reviews—these will be made available to you.
You will each be asked to lead a discussion on one of the assigned books in groups of 2-3. Discussion assignments have been added under the appropriate text and day on the schedule.
Recreational Activities and Points of Interest:
As you know we’ve planned two group outings: Monticello on June 3, and Montpelier on June 10. Please see the schedule additional information about the times of departure and tours.
We’re also happy to suggest other unofficial activities that may be of interest to you, like the Blackfriars Playhouse just over the Blue Ridge Mountains in Staunton, Va. It’s a replica Shakespeare playhouse (quite a good one, in fact) and they’ll be performing Julius Caesar on June 11. Their website, if you want to check them out, americanshakespearecenter.com. We’ve also compiled this Google map, which flags housing and institute locations, as well as local eateries, grocery stores, and shops. You may also want to peruse this website for other attractions and things to do in and around Charlottesville during your stay, or this list of some of our favorite places to visit in the area.
Gym Facilities:
If you’re interested, you can get temporary passes to use UVa’s gyms during your stay by contacting their business office at 434-924-3791. More info can be found at this website: http://recsports.virginia.edu/?q=membership
